Weaponised design is a process that allows for involuntary harm of users within the defined bounds of a digital system. Often facilitated by designers oblivious to the politics of digital infrastructure, interface design is still widely considered to be an apolitical practice, despite traumatic events against users with increasing regularity.
In the context of online services and platforms, this workshop will investigate how this techno-social phenomenon takes place. Through in-depth case studies and discussions, participants will have a chance to widen their understanding of how systems and interfaces once deployed, can produce unwanted effects, as well as tools that might prevent and mitigate their negative consequences.
