[keynote] Grappling with Technosolutionism

Log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

I will draw on cognitive science and trends in technological thinking to explore technosolutionism — the tendency to believe that there is a technical solution for everything. Though almost nobody explicitly endorses this tendency, I will argue that it is still a pervasive bias, and actually a major obstacle to human progress. Of course the response is not to stop innovating but to think critically about the limits of technology. To this end, I will present a formative taxonomy of the types of problems that technology can solve and ones that it cannot and solicit crowd feedback on this topic.
